Homocysteine Lab Tests
Homocysteine is an amino acid produced during the metabolism of methionine and is normally recycled in the body with the help of B vitamins (B6, B12, and folate). Elevated homocysteine has been linked not only to cardiovascular and vascular risk but also to mental health outcomes. Research shows that higher homocysteine levels are associated with cognitive impairment in late-life depression, with individuals showing worse executive functioning and attention as homocysteine rises, especially when depression is present. Studies also report that people with first-episode psychiatric conditions (including depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder) tend to have higher homocysteine than healthy controls, suggesting a broader role in psychopathology. Observational work indicates significant associations between elevated homocysteine and current depressive symptoms, although causality isn’t fully established. Overall, these findings imply that homocysteine may act as a biological marker linked to mood and cognitive dysfunction and that addressing B-vitamin status and methylation may have relevance for mental health.
